Top 7 Things to Look for in a Video on How to Breastfeed

When you are looking for a video on how to breastfeed, you will find many of them available on the Internet. However, you need to be careful that the advice you are getting is sound.

The list below provides 7 questions you need to ask yourself when reviewing breastfeeding videos. Please keep this list in mind when choosing which videos to watch and what advice to follow.

Here are the top 7 things to look for in a video on how to breastfeed:

  1. It’s best if the creator of the video has a well-known breastfeeding expert certification.

  2. Is the video from an organization? If so, is the organization well-known in the breastfeeding or lactation services area?

  3. Does the creator have a website/web presence?

  4. How many videos of this type does the creator have? (If this is their only breastfeeding tips video you need to use discernment if/when following their advice.)

  5. Does the creator back up their breastfeeding advice with facts and additional information?

  6. Does the video show demonstrations of breastfeeding tips or is it just talking? (Just talking can be ok if the person is a breastfeeding expert and is giving you fact-based information but just keep this in mind when determining usefulness and validity of points in “talking head” videos)

  7. Look at the comments briefly. Are the comments mostly positive or negative? (Usually, there will be some experts weighing in on the comments; for example, if you are seeing many RNs, lactation consultants, etc. commenting saying the advice is good or bad, take heed of this.)
